Two Photographers

Image
Photographer 1:  Sebastiao Salgado was born on February 8, 1944, in Gerais, Brazil. During his childhood, Salgado traveled and trained as an economist. He earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of São Paulo in Brazil. Prior to graduating, he worked as an economist for the International Coffee Organization. This required frequent travel to Africa on missions for the World Bank. It’s on these trips when he first started seriously taking photographs. Salgado chose to abandon his occupation and switch to a professional photographer in 1973. He is particularly noted for his social documentary photography of workers in less developed nations. He has traveled to over 120 countries for his photographic projects. Museums and other exhibitions are filled with his work throughout the world. He was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Grant in 1982, the Foreign Honorary Membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1992, along with the Royal Photographic Soc

Selfie vs. Self Portrait

Image
In this assignment, we were tasked with creating a grid of 8 selfies (us taking the photo of ourselves) and one larger self-portrait (someone taking the photo of us). I enjoyed this assignment because of the modern style associated with it. The selfies I took were with my dog. I took a selfie for different major events (the first one was just me and my dog): Christmas, the Super Bowl, Easter, Valentine's day, 4th of July, Halloween, and a birthday. I chose this theme to lighten up the current situation, providing memories and events to look forward to. The self-portrait was the opposite tone, as it portrays how you can be drowned by the media and depressing circumstances we live in. I took the photo close up to emphasize the facial features of conforming and obedient. Inspiration Photo:  https://www.123rf.com/photo_54033439_water-pouring-on-mans-head-profile.html

Snap Seed Photoshoot

Image
Due to the recent spread of Corona Virus Newark Academy has moved to online learning which forces the art classes to think abstractly and find new ways to complete projects. This project we downloaded a photo-taking app on our phone called "SnapSeed". This app allowed us to not only take photos but edit them as well. Snap Seed gave a surprisingly similar experience as to if we were in class. Below are the two photos I took while trying to focus on a specific ordinary object in my home. I tried to use a variety of backgrounds and get below or to the level of the object when shooting. This photo I took of an empty Activia bottle that I drank to emphasize how we are all trying to stay safe and healthy during this pandemic. Activia is a yogurt drink-making company which is known for its healthy amount of probiotics and antioxidants in their drinks and yogurts. I also left part of the silver caping on to show that it was consumed. I placed the bottle on neutral-colored rocks t

One Day Assignment

Image
This project entailed us photographers to have 15 minutes in two spots to take as many photos as possible. I chose for both of my spots to be outside to explore a variety of colors and crisp formatting. All of these photos were taken facing towards the ground to single out an object. I used many browns, greens and moderate colors to bring out the earthy and natural feel of my photos.

Food Time

Image
In this assignment we were asked to make food from scratch and present it in the form of photos. I chose to make Belgian waffles with whipped cream. chocolate syrup, strawberries, and blueberries.  I used a recipe from food.com to make the waffles. The waffles took 30 minutes to make and take pictures of. Although I didn't get to eat the waffles they certainly looked delicious! This assignment was a good challenge to how I could multi task while making food. I put the food into as much light as possibly to accent the details of the waffles. The design I chose with the fruit and chocolate syrup added to the delicate and sophisticated theme I went with to contrast the natural stereotype of waffles. Waffles are seen as lazy and "Sunday' foods. I tried to make these waffles as sophisticated as possible to contrast that stereotype.

Poem

Image
Poetry Assignment: "Acquainted with The Night"- Robert Frost Ethan Polen This assignment asked us to create an adobe flash website based off  the poem we chose off of the Poetry Out Loud website. I chose "Acquainted with the Night" by Robert Frost. Robert Forst s known for his cold and bitter poems. Mainly used to express feelings of sorrow and regret.  I took photos of shadows and darker areas to envelope the theme of darkness. The background of my website is dark to envelop the viewer into the poem. This assignment provided a nice change of pace between assignments.

Westin Food Shoot

Image
Edward Weston:  Edward Henry Weston was a 20th-century American photographer born  March 24, 1886, in HighLand Park IL.  Weston has been labeled as one of the most influential  and innovative photographers in America. Weston specialized in making vegetables  and fruits the star of the photos. Weston was especially good at creating multiple dynamics within a single  photo by using off shaped fruits, or perfect vegetables. In this assignment Mr. Worrell asked us to produce the same theme as Weston, by making the food the "hero" of the shot. We made a collection of four photos with three black & white and one in color. I enjoyed this assignment due to the fact that fruits and vegetables come in all different shapes and sizes giving this assignment a variety of complex ideas and shots.
